Abstract
It has long been recognized that exposure to environmental influences can increase the risk for developing idiopathic Parkinson's disease. The recent characterization of several novel gene mutations in mitochonchondrial and protein handling pathways has shed new light on the underlying cellular disturbances involved in familial Parkinson's disease. These findings point to cellular targets for drug development in Parkinson's disease; however, more studies are needed to identify potential biomarkers that can be used in clinical studies.
