Abstract

During the Valsalva maneuver, a subject performs a standardized maneuver resulting in an increase in intrathoracic pressure, leading to a series of physiological changes. These include a reduction in preload to the heart and unloading of baroreflexes. The maneuver is mainly used in the autonomic laboratory to evaluate the vagal and adrenergic components of the baroreflex, and to study the Valsalva ratio as an index of cardiovagal function. The test has high sensitivity and reproducibility.
