Patients given this diagnosis more than 10 years ago, based on nonspecific echocardiographic criteria, may not have the disorder at all. Correcting the diagnosis can alleviate patient anxiety, resolve problems with insurance coverage, and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use for endocarditis prophylaxis.
