Pacemakers, defibrillators, and resynchronization devices have become increasingly complex. At times, either due to component malfunction or parameter settings that do not properly match the clinical situation, cardiac electronic devices do not deliver (or withhold) therapy appropriately. The systematic approach to the patient with a potentially malfunctioning device, the acquisition and interpretation of diagnostic information, and the strategies used to correct the malfunction are reviewed in this chapter. Troubleshooting may at times be the most challenging aspect of device management, yet is often the most rewarding, due to the significant clinical impact it offers.
