Abstract
Mortality attributable to smoking has reached staggering proportions in the United States and throughout the world. It is estimated that more than 400,000 deaths per year are directly attributable to cigarette smoking in the United States. Data indicate that smoking-attributable morbidity and mortality will continue to be a significant health problem in the United States and the developing world for decades to come.
