Abstract
To the Editor: To the casual reader, the inability of Phillips and Paight (Sept. 24, 1987, issue)1 to replicate the results of Gould and Shaffer (Sept. 11, 1986, issue)2 comes as no surprise. The extensive confounding of the variable of interest with numerous extraneous variables, as well as the inability to determine who actually watched the movies, would seem to cast doubt on the reliability of the results of the Gould and Shaffer paper. The more observant reader may have expected that the results would not be reproduced, given the peculiar patterns of the data reported by Gould and Shaffer.
