Abstract
A rapidly enlarging mass in the thyroid is rare in incidence but usually an oncology emergency. Aggressive thyroid malignancies such as poorly differentiated thyroid cancer and anaplastic thyroid cancer are commonly encountered diagnoses in this particular clinical situation. In addition, other aggressive tumors such as primary thyroid lymphomas sarcomas are also possible. The prognosis and treatment of these malignancies varies significantly. Therefore a prompt and rapid evaluation and institution of treatment is critical for optimal outcome. A discussion with the patient about goals of care is also of paramount importance, especially in anaplastic thyroid cancer. In this chapter we describe the evaluation and clinical management of anaplastic thyroid cancer and primary thyroid lymphoma.
