Stair step artifacts

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Imaging description Stair step artifact is seen on multiplanar (coronal and sagittal) and three-dimensional reformatted CT images, when wide collimations and nonoverlapping reconstruction intervals are used [1]. It is seen as low-attenuation lines around the edges or traversing vessels, giving them the appearance of a series of steps. This artifact is more pronounced when wide collimations and nonoverlapping reconstruction intervals are used. The artifact is accentuated by cardiac and respiratory motion (Figure 83.1). Importance Failure to recognize this artifact could result in a misdiagnosis of pulmonary embolism.
