Abstract

The functional status of the myocardium may be described by its elasticity and contractile strength. To evaluate the accuracy of estimates of regional muscle stresses and strains in the working heart computed by the finite-element analysis, a procedure has been developed that consists of (1) affixing radiopaque markers on the epicardial and endocardial surfaces of the heart, (2) recording the markers' displacements during cardiac cycles by use of an x-ray scanner, and (3) computing the stresses and strains in tetrahedral regions formed with the markers as vertices.
