Recurrent Disease Following Liver Transplantation

Liver transplant is the standard of care for eligible patients with end-stage liver disease, acute liver failure, metabolic disorders, and specific hepatic malignancies. Recurrent disease is common after transplant. The frequency of recurrence and the clinical significance of this recurrence varies widely depending on the primary indication for transplantation. This chapter will focus more on the common diseases that recur after transplant, including viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Diseases with less frequent recurrence including alcoholic liver disease, Budd-Chiari syndrome, and metabolic diseases will also be briefly reviewed.
