Abstract
To the Editor: Melton et al. (Nov. 11 issue)* suggest that over 100,000 total hip arthroplasties should be done in the United States per year. This is well over the current number being done. In their paper, the discrepancy seems to be in the 31.5 per cent of arthroplasties done for “proximal femur and other fractures.” One has to assume that they are treating routine intracapsular (subcapital) fractures of the hip with a total hip arthroplasty. This is by no means common or accepted practice in the United States. Most orthopedic surgeons treat this injury with reduction and pinning or.
