Abstract

Transmural distribution of intramyocardial stresses and strains were estimated before and after ligation of the distal half of the left circumflex coronary artery of an isolated, metabolically supported, working canine left ventricle. A plane-strain finite-element model was employed for analyzing the pre- and post-ligation cross-sectional shapes reconstructed with a computerized transaxial x-ray scanning system. The results indicate a close relationship between the region of altered compressive stress and the region normally perfused by the ligated artery.
