Abstract
Croatian psychiatry has taken a new direction of restructuring from the mostly hospital oriented psychiatric care towards the community-based psychiatric care. The state of psychiatric service in the Republic of Croatia is presented. A questionnaire containing all relevant data for evaluation of the work of psychiatric service in the Republic of Croatia (type of institution, number of beds in particular institutions, personnel structure, university degree and status of physicians working in psychiatric service, number of M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees, mean age of specialist psychiatrists in particular institutions, number of other staff members in psychiatric service) was used in the survey. Anticipated new employments, retirements and possible dismissals for the forthcoming two-year period are considered. Finally, major structural difficulties encountered in daily routine and most common objections are discussed.
