Abstract
The use of parenteral nutrition (PN) is typically reserved for cases in which the gastrointestinal tract is nonfunctional. It can also be used as supplementary nutrition when oral or enteral nutrition is inadequate. PN provides both micronutrient and macronutrient support along with adequate hydration via central or peripheral access. It can be used as short term or long term. However, its use is not without complication. The complications can be broadly categorized as catheter-related or metabolic-related complication.
