Ozone isotopes in the mass range 48 to 54 amu have been formed in electric discharge using isotopically enriched molecular oxygen. Measurements were compared with expected statistical ozone distributions. Normalized to mass 48, ozone measured at mass 54 (18O3) showed no enhancement while mass 51 (18O17O16O) showed an enhancement of over 20%. Other ozone peaks have less enhancement. The results suggest that the heavy ozone enhancement observed in the stratosphere and in other laboratory experiments is strongly related to the symmetry of the molecules; however, other processes may also influence the enrichment.
