Abstract
Top seeded melt process is a well known technique for manufacturing bulk superconducting discs with high trapped magnetic fields and levitation forces. This method, however requires a long time for sample growth and is limited in the length of samples grown (∼10-15 mm). In this work, we have developed a seeding method, "Multiple Seeded Melt Growth (MSMG)", which reduces the manufacturing time and increases the length of samples. The basic idea is to press SmBCO seeds in the body of the green disk (70%YBa2Cu 3O7 + 30%Y2BaCuO5) before compaction. A modified heat treatment profile is then used to grow the bulk superconductor. The microstructure and crystal orientation were studied and found to be comparable to those of samples grown by top seeded melt growth method. We also studied the distribution of trapped magnetic fields in samples grown by this method. The results indicate that using this method, the sample is well oriented throughout the whole length in spite of decreasing the manufacturing time and increasing the sample length. These results give promise to the use of this technique in enhancing the superconducting properties of bulk textured YBCO.
