To the Editor: Riggs and Melton (June 26 issue)1 advocated the use of dual-photon densitometry for the measurement of bone density to evaluate osteoporosis. They dismissed peripheral measurements by stating, “The correlation between density in the lumbar spine and radius, even at an ultradistal site, or the os calcis, is too low… for vertebral density to be predicted accurately for individual patients.” Since the presumed purpose of any osteoporosis screening test would be to predict which patients are at risk for fracture, not to measure bone density in a specific site, I do not believe that Riggs…
