Interesting and useful biochemical properties of lanthanides

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

The biological ubiquity and importance of calcium ions are matched by our lack of an overall theory of their biological functions. Lanthanide ions possess unique chemical properties which make them valuable probes of the interaction of Ca2+ with biological systems. Several new or improved techniques also exploit these properties which may form the basis for novel solutions to medical problems.
