Abstract
The number of individuals who benefit from pacemaker, defibrillator, or resynchronization therapy has grown dramatically over the past decade as new studies have demonstrated symptom and survival benefit in appropriately selected patients. At the same time, device insertion in individuals who may only marginally benefit is associated with increased morbidity and worse outcomes. This chapter reviews the current state of knowledge to identify which patients benefit the most from the device therapy, and which patients are not suitable candidates. It systematically reviews pacemaker, defibrillator, and resynchronization device indications.
