Improving emergency department physician management via computer simulation

Abstract

This paper presents a study on the management of physicians in an emergency department (ED). A discrete-event simulation model of the ED at the Foothills Medical Centre in the Calgary Health Region was developed comprising the following two layers: (i) the patient-flow layer to simulate the patient interactions with different ED resources; and (ii) the policy layer to simulate the ED's management and operational policies. The model can be used to test different ED physician management strategies, work practices, and alternative shift schedules to determine their impact on patient waiting time in the ED.
