Abstract

Immobilization of an injured extremity is a crucial skill for the emergency physician. Several basic splinting/casting techniques can be quickly performed to diminish pain, help maintain bony alignment, protect injured surrounding soft tissue structures, and promote early healing. A variety of materials may be implemented, and knowledge of indication, equipment, and technique is of paramount importance toward generating a favorable outcome.
