Image artifacts in vibroacoustography

Abstract

Vibro-acoustography (VA) is a recently developed imaging method based on the dynamic response of the object to a low-frequency radiation force of ultrasound. This method utilizes the radiation force of focused ultrasound to produce a localized radiation force on the object. Here, we discuss image artefacts and demonstrate these artefacts in vibro-acoustography through computer simulation and in-vitro experiments. The results indicate that sharp transitions in object properties produce strong responses in vibro-acoustography. Experiments are conducted on excised fixed liver tissues including focal lesions and breast tissue with microcalcification. Resulting images which are in agreement with the theory of simulation show the lesions with enhanced boundary lines.
