Abstract
The coaxial counterflow DLC(TM) 500 blood access catheter has been found by both patients and staf to be a satisfactory substitute for the 'Y' type single-needle access catheter, and greatly simplifies single-needle hemodialysis. The needle pressure-flow characteristics in the range of blood flow rates from 150 to 300 ml/min are within acceptable limits and permit a wide and clinically appropriate range of ultrafiltration with current dialyzers. Compared to 'Y' needle recirculation, recirculation with this access device is markedly reduced and clinically insignificant. The coaxial counterflow catheter offers an attractive alternative to both double-needle and standard single-needle blood access techniques for hemodialysis.
