Gold nanoparticles inhibit the proliferation of multiple myeloma cells

Multiple myeloma (MM), a monoclonal plasma-cell malignancy characterized by levels of pararproteins in blood and/or urine, lytic bone lesions, anemia, renal dysfunction, and cytokines, remains universally fatal. The treatments for this disease include combination therapy with or without stem cell transplantation, use of alkylating agents, glucocortisteroids, and thalidomide. The application of gold nanoparticles (GNP) that remarkably inhibits the proliferation of MM cells lines is tested in a dose-dependent manner. The UV-visible spectrum of GNP is formed by using the sodium borohydride reduction method. A characteristic surface-plasmon resonance band of GNP indicates the formation of GNPs. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) picture shows that spherical GNPs of nearly 5 nm are formed by using the method.
