Abstract
Gallstones are extremely common, occurring in 10% to 20% of women and 5% to 10% of men in Western cultures. They generate an enormous medical and financial burden. More than 500,000 cholecystectomies are performed each year in the United States. An understanding of the physiology, presentation, and efficient approaches to management is therefore important. Optimal clinical approaches vary considerably depending on the presentation.
