Abstract

Disorders of sweating can result in excessive (hyperhidrosis) or deficient (hypohidrosis and anhidrosis) sweat production. The distribution of abnormal sweating can be determined using autonomic tests with inferences regarding the pathophysiology of the disorder based on sweating pattern. An algorithm is provided to help in the differential diagnosis of disorders where hyperhidrosis is present. Disorders causing anhidrosis are organized by the pattern of anhidrosis; for instance, a glove and stocking pattern indicates a peripheral autonomic neuropathy whereas global anhidrosis suggests multiple system atrophy or chronic idiopathic anhidrosis. Treatment modalities vary and are based on the underlying disorder.
