Abstract

Adhesion and polymer science form the essential foundation for all medical adhesives, sealants and sutures. These materials are utilized in all aspects of medical care to include bone healing, wound repair, tissue interface sealing and infection management among many others. The goal of this chapter will be to provide a basic understanding of the history, development and clinical utility of multiple medical adhesives, sealants and sutures as they pertain to the modern medical practice. In addition we will discuss novel closure techniques that utilize both polymeric suture materials in addition to molding techniques to increased wound closure integrity.
