Abstract
Results from previous studies suggest that laparoscopic-assisted colectomy is safe, feasible and may offer important patient-related benefits. It is not yet been determined whether the same procedure accomplishes a thorough oncologic resection and/or whether introduces a risk for altered patterns or frequency of recurrence. Early results from a prospective trial and from a retrospective series indicate that the same extent of resection can be performed and that it is safe to proceed with the national trial to more precisely evaluate the risk/benefit ratio of this new procedure.
