Abstract
In the internal intensive care unit of a general hospital we followed all patients (54) requiring artificial ventilation for various causes from October 1989 until March 1990. 9 of the 54 patients (17%) were still alive 6 months later. The mean age of the survivors was 63±16,4 years compared to 70±10,1 years of the non-survivors (n.s.). The survival rate of women was significantly higher compared to men (25,8% vs 4,8%, p < 0,05). In the group of survivors lung and cardiac diseases showed equal prevalence. There was a clear predominance of cardiac over lung diseases among the non-survivors (60% vs 35%, n.s.).
