Abstract

Calciphylaxis is a highly morbid and life-threatening condition characterized by calcification, intimal fibrosis and thrombosis of pannicular vessels. Clinically, patients present with painful, necrotic ulcerations, plaques, and subcutaneous nodules. Calciphylaxis was once thought to be a rare condition most frequently encountered in end-stage renal disease patients. A broader range of comorbidities has been identified. The diagnosis of calciphylaxis is associated with high mortality rates. Better treatment interventions are needed. In this chapter, the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and therapeutic interventions are discussed.
