Abstract
To the Editor: Schwab et al. (Nov. 23 issue)* described atrial endocrine function in humans with artificial hearts. They concluded that atrial natriuretic peptide is normally present in such subjects and is appropriately released into the circulation in association with an elevation in right atrial pressure. We report our experience with three patients who had had Jarvik-7 permanent artificial heart implants for one, two, and five days. Patient 1 was also evaluated five days after orthotopic transplantation. The principal results are indicated in Table 1.
