Abstract

To the Editor: If apolipoprotein A-I is considered to be a portion of plasma high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) particles, how is it that the plasma levels by weight can be four times higher than HDL levels? Figure 2 in the article by Maciejko et al. (Aug. 18 issue) shows patients with HDL levels in the range of 40 mg per deciliter who simultaneously had apolipoprotein A-I levels in the range of 160 mg per deciliter.* Does this suggest that the major portion of apolipoprotein A-I is found outside HDL particles, or is this an artifact of laboratory-assay units?.
