Abstract

Today's trainees must learn endoscopic proficiency with a clear sense of the quality measures that are important in optimizing patient care and minimizing error and legal recourse. Both the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) have highlighted the importance of quality in endoscopy with formal guidelines. The following chapter reviews the key quality measures required in the preprocedural, intraprocedural, and postprocedural time periods. Emphasis is placed on the importance of a systematic approach and proper documentation. These quality measures represent best clinical practice and are integral in the continuous improvement of health care delivery.
