Stress Fractures as a Cause of Knee Pain

To the Editor: The knee joint is a frequent site of pain from multiple causes.¹ Recently, we saw a patient in whom the cause of knee discomfort was a stress fracture of the medial tibial condyle. A 75-year-old retired teacher was seen for evaluation of low-back and right-knee pain. She had had back pain for several years, which had been attributed to degenerative osteoarthritis of the spine and osteoporosis. Although she had been advised to take calcium and vitamin D, she had done so variably and intermittently. A few weeks before this visit she experienced the spontaneous onset of pain.
