Abstract

The spleen can be involved in myriad hematologic and vascular disorders. Regardless of disorder, splenectomy may be indicated for diagnosis, symptomatic splenomegaly, or clinically significant cytopenias. This chapter assesses the role of splenectomy broadly for nontraumatic conditions and provides an overview of the operative approaches and management of the postsplenectomy state.
