N2 - GERD is a common condition, generally caused by transient LES relaxations. The spectrum of disease due to GERD is wide, ranging from symptoms alone to esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, and respiratory tract complications. Excellent diagnostic tests are available to confirm the diagnosis and stage the disease, and medications can predictably relieve symptoms and heal even the most severe forms of esophagitis.
