Abstract

The photochemical reduction of uranyl ion with trimethylphosphite and triethylphosphite has been investigated in dry acetone medium in the presence of trimethylacetic acid, using radiation in the visible region (λ ≥ 365 nm). The formation of uranium(V) is supported by the electron spin resonance and electronic absorption spectral data. The quantum yields and Stern-Volmer quenching constants with the substrates have been calculated. With the available evidence an electron transfer mechanism has been postulated for the photochemical reduction of uranyl ion.
