MR imaging of the musculoskeletal system: A 5-year appraisal

MR imaging can clearly delineate many important pathologic processes in the musculoskeletal system. Because it is expensive, MR imaging should be used only when it can provide unique diagnostic information that will significantly affect management. The role of MR as a problem-solving tool for musculoskeletal imaging has been stressed in the past. It was reserved for cases in which more mature techniques such as CT left some deficiency in the diagnostic workup. Now that a number of clear indications for musculoskeletal MR imaging are apparent, it seems prudent to apply the modality early and decisively in appropriate cases. In this way, redundant diagnostic tests can be eliminated, appropriate therapy can be identified early, and unnecessary surgical intervention and hospitalization can be avoided.
