Abstract
Ischemic injury to the rectum is uncommon and occurs in less than 5% of patients with ischemic colitis. Most patients with rectal ischemia have underlying aortoiliac vascular disease and those without underlying vascular compromise usually have suffered a severe hypotensive event and have colonic injury, as well. In this review, the previously reported cases of ischemic proctitis with or without colonic involvement are reviewed. Recognition of the clinical features and differential diagnosis can shorten the workup and avoid use of ineffective therapies.
