The primary objectives of this multi-session symposium are to 1) bring together professionals in the many areas of hand ergonomics, 2) highlight the current state of research in the field of hand ergonomics and 3) to focus on the direction for future research. The area of hand ergonomics encompasses anthropometry, strength, biomechanics, and cumulative trauma disorders in the hand and wrist. The hand and wrist strength, biomechanics, and potential cumulative trauma disorders are influenced by tools such as hand tools and input devices, by personal protective equipment such as gloves, or by tasks which induce fatigue, repetition and awkward postures. The researchers must be joined by practitioners using case studies from the field. By grouping the hand and wrist ergonomics under a unified multi-session symposium the presenters and attendees can put all the subsets of hand ergonomics together and focus on the future needs in hand ergonomics.
