Alveolar epithelial cytoskeleton and cell vulnerability to stretch

Two sets of experiments were performed to test the hypothesis that viability after stretch is related to the microfilament structure. To enhance cell resistance to stretch, a potent mitogen with protective effects on the alveolar epithelium was pretreated in vivo with keratinocyte growth factor (KGF). The enhancement of F-actin in concert was observed. To depolymerize F-actin, cells were pretreated with Cytochalasin D. It was determined that cell viability after cyclic stretch is compromised compared with untreated stretched cells.
