Abstract
Clark and Slevin studied six patients with colorectal cancer who had fluorouracil-induced stomatitis. They observed a decrease in stomatitis in all six patients after treatment with allopurinol mouthwash 1 mg/mL. Two patients with taste abnormalities showed reductions in taste dysfunction. We undertook a similar study to determine whether allopurinol mouthwash can selectively protect the oral mucosa from toxicity. The results were compared with those for a historical control group.
