Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program - Hatim Hassan, MD, PhD

The Foundation's Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program was designed to provide four-year postdoctoral research awards offered to historically disadvantaged physicians who are committed to developing careers in academic medicine, to improving the health of underserved populations, and to furthering the understanding and elimination of health disparities.Hatim Hassan, M.D., Ph.D., will conduct research based on kidney stones. Seventy to eighty percent of kidney stones are composed of calcium oxalate. Anion exchanger SLC26A6 (A6) plays an essential role in intestinal oxalate secretion and stone prevention. This project will test the hypothesis that changes in cholinergic tone affects A6 activity and thus could modify urinary oxalate and stone risk.
